Are LED Headlights Right for You?

LED headlights are a popular alternative to OEM halogens. Some people like the idea of converting to LED headlights when one of their OEM halogens breaks. But LEDs aren't for everyone. If you’re thinking about converting to LED lights, it’s still important to determine whether this decision is the right one for you.

Pros of LED Headlights

Compared to halogen headlights, LED headlights shine brighter and look better. The main reason people convert to LED headlights is to spruce up their car's appearance. LED headlights look stylish. They also illuminate evenly. Those who drive on dark rural roads often would benefit from a set of LED headlights.

Cons of LED Headlights

There are a few cons, however, associated with LED headlights, and they are:

  • Cost: LED headlights cost more upfront than halogen headlights. Depending on the brand, they may break sooner than expected. GM doesn't offer OEM LED headlights, so you'd have to go the aftermarket route. The quality of aftermarket headlights is always questionable. Some brands are good quality, and some are poor quality, but it's hard to tell which is which. So we're hesitant to say that you can rely on LED headlights as much as you can rely on OEM halogens.
  • Quality/fitment: Like we mentioned in the last point, you can only get aftermarket LED headlights. That means quality and fitment aren't always guaranteed. Many aftermarket LED headlights are built with inferior quality materials and universal parts. That means a set of replacement LED headlights might not fit or perform quite as well as expected.
  • Heat distribution: Unlike halogen lights, LEDs don’t emit very much heat through the lens. In some cases, LED lights may not make enough heat to melt snow or ice off of the lens.

All in all, many people would agree that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. If you ask us, it's safer to replace malfunctioning headlights with OEM halogens.
