What an Oil Filter Does

Motor oil lubricates the various moving engine parts. If the impurities in the oil make their way into your engine, they can build up and cause a lot of problems. Your motor oil also collects contaminants that are in your engine as it makes its way through. The oil runs through your oil filter, where all of those microscopic troublemakers are removed from the oil so it can take another tour of the engine. At some point, though, your filter is either going to degrade or clog. That's when it needs to be replaced.

Signs of a Failing Oil Filter

Check your oil filter's condition if you experience any of the following:

• Oil pressure dash light comes on
• Engine starts sputtering
• metallic noises coming from your engine
• Suffering engine performance
• Dirty smoke coming out of your exhaust

If you don't notice any of those signs, just set a regular schedule for changing your oil filter. You don’t need to change it every time you change your oil. Every other oil change is an ideal schedule. What you do want to make sure of is that you use a genuine GM oil filter when you do switch yours out.
